6 Days Marangu Route Kilimanjaro Trek
6 Days | 6 Days Marangu Route Kilimanjaro Trek
Overview
The Marangu Route, also known as the “Coca-Cola Route,” is one of the most popular trails to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro and offers hut accommodations along the way. This 6-day trek provides a gradual ascent, giving you more time to acclimatize while passing through lush rainforests, moorlands, alpine deserts, and finally reaching the snow-capped Uhuru Peak (5,895m).
Best Time to Visit:
January to March & June to October
Starts at:
$1,700.00
Per Person
Day 1 - Airport pick-up- Drop off at hotel
Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport or your hotel in Moshi. Meet your guide for a pre-trek briefing and gear check. Spend the night in a hotel in Moshi to rest before starting your adventure.
Day 2 - Marangu Gate (1860m) – Mandara hut (2715m)
After breakfast, transfer from Moshi to Marangu Gate, where you will register with park authorities and meet your trekking crew. The hike begins through lush rainforest, with picnic lunch en route, and concludes at Mandara Hut in the afternoon. You may take an optional short hike to Maundi Crater for panoramic views before returning to the hut for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 3: Mandara Hut – Horombo Hut (3,720m)
Depart after breakfast and continue your ascent through the heath and moorland zones, enjoying expansive views of Mawenzi Peak. Arrive at Horombo Hut in the afternoon, where you will rest and acclimatize for the summit push. Dinner and overnight stay are at Horombo Hut.
Day 4: Horombo Hut – Kibo Hut (4,700m)
After breakfast, trek through the alpine desert zone, crossing the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo Peaks. Arrive at Kibo Hut in the afternoon, where you will rest and have an early dinner in preparation for the midnight summit attempt.
Day 5: Kibo Hut - Summit - Horombo Hut
Early in the morning (midnight to 2 am), commence the climb to the summit on steep and heavy scree or snow up to Gilman’s point located on the crater rim. Continuing, we now ascend to Uhuru Peak. From here we descend, stopping for lunch and a rest at Kibo before continuing on to the Horombo encampment. The beginning of this climb is done in the dark and requires headlamps or flashlights. It will be very cold until you start descending, so you will need all of your warm layers. This is by far the most difficult part of the trek with many switchbacks. Moving slowly (pole pole) and an optimistic attitude will get you there.
Day 6: Horombo - Marangu Gate - Moshi
After breakfast, a steady descent takes us down through moorland to the Mandara Hut. Continue descending through lush forest paths to the National Park Gate at Marangu. At lower elevations, it can be wet and muddy. Gaiters and trekking poles will help. Shorts and T-shirts will probably be plenty to wear (keep rain gear and warmer clothing handy). Our driver will meet you at Marangu village/gate and drive you back to your hotel in Moshi. Now it is time for celebration.
